Third Augsburg Johannesburg Conference on Legal Certainty and Fundamental Rights from 6th to 9th of June 2019 on Frauenchiemsee Island

From 6th to 9th of June 2019, the third joint conference between the law faculties of the Universities of Augsburg and Johannesburg (South Africa) took place on Frauenchiemsee Island (Lake Chiemsee). Fifteen scientists from Johannesburg and ten Augsburg faculty members participated to discuss current issues from all areas of law relating to legal certainty and fundamental rights, to exchange different points of view and to find solutions and suggestions for improving the two legal systems in the interest of cross-fertilization of both systems.

Dekan Prof. Dr. Matthias RossiThe cooperation with Johannesburg has existed for over 15 years and can look back on a lively exchange in the past. The first two joint conferences were held in Augsburg in 2016 and in Johannesburg in 2017. It has become a tradition that not only professors, but also young academics (doctoral and post-doctoral students) take part in the conference.

At the conference, a South African legal scholar first presented his/her views on a specific legal problem, whereupon an Augsburg representative commented with regard to German law. Assistant lecturer Fr. Jackie MaholoSubsequently, the plenum looked for joint proposals and common solutions. The selection of covered legal areas was comprehensive: from (international) criminal law and public international law through constitutional law to labor law, insolvency law and capital market law, numerous current legal problems were addressed.

The conference was framed by a visit to Herrenchiemsee Island with a guided tour in the “New Palace” as well as a guided tour on German constitutional history in the “Old Palace” (Augustiner-Chorherrenstift). In addition, the conference participants undertook an afternoon excursion by cable car to Kampenwand Mountain.

The results of the conference will soon be published in a conference transcript, which will be published in cooperation with the German Nomos and the South African Juta publishing house.
